Notes:
This book was purchased in honour of the University of Alberta’s Faculty Women’s Club 75th Anniversary. As stated in the colophon, this book “will certainly inspire others to consider how the artist has challenged the format of the traditional book with innovative physical structures and unconventional boundaries.” The artist has cut pages from the Life Nature Library series and folded them into Froebel stars. These are contained in a shiho chitsu box. Once you unwrap the hematite clasp — a magnetic stone known to have grounding, protective, and balancing properties — everything else is left to chance. Paper stars tumble out, surrounded by snapshots of the galaxy, which line the inside of the box. Since the stars fall and settle differently each time, every experience with this book is unique. Miller has captured both the stabilizing and random forces of the universe, and creates a book that is conceptually smart.
